What is a name wheel?

What is a name wheel? A name wheel is an instructional tool that is used to help students learn language skills and deepen their understanding of language. It helps them with spelling, pronunciation, and the ability to understand and construct words.

Name wheels are used in both formal and informal language learning settings and can help students progress at their own pace as they move through levels of learning as they become more comfortable. The name wheel combines visual elements with audio clues to give students an enhanced experience when learning new concepts.

Let's look at how a name wheel works: A name wheel consists of two concentric discs that have various images on each side. When the pupil turns the first disc, one image will appear at a time on the top part of the second disc, spinning from one side to the other. This motion provides the student with multiple opportunities to see and hear different aspects of the chosen word or concept. As the student turns the second disc, different sound waves will be associated with each image on each side. Combined with verbal instructions accompanying each slide or sound wave, this gives a much deeper auditory and visual learning experience.

The beauty of this type of tool is that it's highly adaptable for many types of learners – auditory, visual, physical learners all get something out of it! Furthermore, because students can use their own interpretation while engaging with these elements they are able to apply those ideas in to their everyday context – creating meaningful connections that are transferable outside of the classroom environment into real life situations.
